If you’re good at something, never do it for free. Heath Ledger made these words and many more memorable when he played the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie, Dark Knight. When the Brokeback Mountain actor had been cast to play the Crown Prince of Crime from DC Comics, there were some naysayers who felt Jack Nicholson’s performance could not be topped.
Ledger proved them wrong in the very first scene when he gatecrashed a meeting of Gotham’s mob bosses.
Dark Knight deals with the moral dilemma Joker puts Batman in, when he tries to prove that there is nothing redeemable about humanity and the city of Gotham, that the Caped Crusader so desperately wants to save. Over the film, Joker taunts and pushes Batman to the edge, even pulling his love interest, Rachel into the mix. Ultimately, Batman gets the upper hand, but not before Joker has played his last card.
He takes the best of Gotham – Harvey Dent, the DA and someone who could well run for mayor. Joker twists Dent’s mind until he becomes one of Batman’s more recognizable villains, Two-Face.
The film has stood out for not just Ledger’s acting, but also for how he portrayed Joker as more than just a madman or a thug, which have been the iterations thus far. Nolan’s Joker was one of conviction, and the popularity of Ledger’s portrayal would lead to DC trying to replicate its success with Jared Leto, which didn’t turn out too good, and then with Joaquin Phoenix, which became yet another critically and commercially acclaimed performance.
