Here are some facts about the Red Fort:

– It was originally white. The fort was fashioned with sandstones and was white in colour when Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, began construction on it in 1648. Along with the name change, the fort’s colour was also changed to red. The British had ordered it all to happen. Limestones were originally used to construct the Red Fort. The British had to paint it red when the white stone started to flake off.

– The fort’s previous name was Qila-e-Mubarak. The Blessed Fort is how it can be translated. It is said that Shah Jahan built the fort when decided to move his capital from Agra to Delhi

– There is no doubt that construction and machinery were scarce back then, or should we say during the rule of Shah Jahan, the grandson of Akbar the Great. Ustad Hamid and Ustad Ahmed, two of the most innovative architects of their era, started building in 1638 and finished it ten years later.

– Many people are unaware that the Kohinoor diamond was once a piece of Shah Jahan’s regal throne, which was housed in the Diwani-i-Khas. Years later, Nadir Shah (the “Persian Napoleon”) stole the prized stone. The throne was built of solid gold and was encrusted with priceless gems including emeralds, pearls, diamonds, and rubies.
