Following Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica as the largest hot springs in the world, the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest in the United States. This landmark is situated in the Midway Geyser Basin.
Due to its stunning hue, geologists with the Hayden Geological Survey in 1871 took note of Grand Prismatic Spring and gave it its name. Red, orange, yellow, green, and blue are among the pigments that most closely resemble the rainbow formed.
Early European explorers and surveyors are responsible for the earliest descriptions of the spring. Four American Fur Company trappers traversed the Midway Geyser Basin in 1839 and noted a “boiling lake,” which was probably the Grand Prismatic Spring and had a diameter of 300 feet. The Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition visited the spring in 1870 and noted a nearby geyser that was 50 feet tall later named Excelsior.
Microbial mats along the borders of the mineral-rich water are what cause the spring’s brilliant, vibrant colours. The microbial mats create hues ranging from green to red; the intensity of the colour in the mats is influenced by the proportion of chlorophyll to carotenoids as well as the gradient in runoff temperature. The mats are often dark green in the winter, as opposed to orange and red in the summer. Due to the intense heat, the pool’s centre is sterile.
The deep blue hue of the water in the pool’s centre is a result of the natural blueness of water. Due to its sterility and depth, the effect is strongest in the spring’s centre.
