Born as Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, she was the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from 1936 to 1952 as the wife of King George VI. Later, she was titled as Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Mother to Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth married King George VI in 1923. Before becoming The Queen Mother, Elizabeth held these titles %u2013 Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Elizabeth, Duchess of York, and Queen Elizabeth.

The then Duke of York, “Bertie” (King George VI), proposed to Elizabeth but she turned him down twice being “afraid never, never again to be free to think, speak and act as I feel I really ought to”. In 1923, Elizabeth accepted the third proposition of engagement and married the Duke of York on 26 April 1923, at Westminster Abbey, becoming Her Royal Highness Duchess of York.

As for her role as a Queen consort to George VI, Queen Elizabeth took a particularly notable role, and supported the King and took much responsibility. During the World Wars, Queen Elizabeth and George VI became symbols of strength for the country. As a matter of fact, Adolf Hitler once described her as “the most dangerous woman in Europe”.

The Crown portrays Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother as a %u2013 supportive, caring, and loving wife to King  George VI. Apart from this, she is also a good mother to Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, and a good grandmother to Prince Charles and Princess Anne. The Queen Mother is intelligent, shrewd in regard to court life, and is also very charismatic and adept as Queen consort.

All throughout the series, the Queen Mother seldom shows her more fun-loving side. To cite some examples, we have seen her leading a conga at Princess Margaret’s engagement party which she remarked by saying “everything improves with a drink” in season 3. Also, in season 4, she was shown playing ibble-dibble.

Nevertheless, The Queen Mother is not actually what she seems as she is more of a complex woman. Following the death of her husband, she became acrimonious due to the series of losses %u2013 the loss of a husband, the loss of a home, the loss of a more meaningful role. To sum up the character of The Queen Mother in The Crown it will be %u2013 ‘a sharp-tongued, bitter, fun-loving sometimes, and at times a ruthless conservative dedicated to the Crown’.

For season 1 and 2, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother was played by Victoria Hamilton, and in season 3 and 4, it was played by Marion Bailey.
