Thursday night football in week 2 of the 2022 NFL season came to an end with the Kansas City Chiefs scripting a comeback victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs beat the Chargers 27-24 after trailing for the first three quarters of the match.

Chargers’ defense starts strong, but Mahomes adjusts

The Los Angeles Chargers began on a strong note and led the game for the first three quarters against the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes started as the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, who could not open their scoring till the second quarter.

The Chargers’ defense put up a valiant display, making 5 hits on the Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. While the 26-year-old could not make much difference in the first quarter, he came back with force in the second, when he registered an incredible nine-yard sidearm touchdown pass that was converted by 30-year-old running back Jerick McKinnon.

Mahomes completed 24 passes out of 35 attempts in 235 yards and two touchdown passes in the game.

Kansas City Chiefs defense steps up

While the Kansas City Chiefs began the game underwhelmingly, allowing the Chargers’ to score in the first quarter, they became much more composed in the rest of the game. 

The Chiefs recorded a total of 73 tackles, 21 more than the Chargers in the game. They also registered 2 sacks, lost 4 tackles and defended 6 passes. The Chiefs’ defense made 8 hits on the opposing quarterback, three more than the Chargers’ defense and scored 1 touchdown.

Mike Williams has an outstanding day in Keenan Allen’s absence

The Chargers’ star wide receiver Keenan Allen was ruled out of the game against the Chiefs and they replaced him with Mike Williams. The 27-year-old did not disappoint as he was one of the standout players for the visitors.

Williams’ highlight of the game was when he made a one-handed touchdown catch in the third quarter, giving the Chargers a 17-7 lead. The catch also meant that Williams has now registered 1,199 receiving yards since 2017, more than any other player in the NFL. His third quarter catch also received praise from NBA superstar LeBron James.

He finished the game with 8 receptions in 113 yards with an average of 14.1 yards per catch and 1 touchdown.

Justin Herbert guts it out despite injury to keep Chargers in game

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was one of the standout performers of the game. He suffered two hits in less than 10 minutes of the game but went on to complete 33 out of 48 passes in 334 yards, 3 touchdown passes and 1 interception.

While the 24-year-old did his best, it was not enough to hand the Chargers a win.

A tale of two halves – Kansas City dominates the second half to win

As mentioned before, Kansas City Chiefs began the game underwhelmingly, failing to score in the first quarter but conceding. They trailed for three quarters of the game against the visitors but made a comeback in the final quarter to win the game 27-24.

The Chiefs scored 7 points each in the second and third quarters but registered a massive 13 points in the penultimate quarter, which helped them to reign victorious.
