The 2019 film, Joker, directed by Todd Phillips saw Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the iconic supervillain who is also the arch-enemy of Batman. Straying away from the DCEU cannon, Phillips and Phoenix created a character study of an individual who is so bogged down by the cruelty he experiences in his everyday life, that the only escape he can find is through violence.
Phoenix’s haunting expressions as Arthur Fleck slowly descends into a maniac who can kill for fun is something fans will not forget easily. Notably, a sequel for the film has already been announced, where Joker’s love interest and a supervillain in her own right, Harley Quinn, will be portrayed by singer Lady Gaga.
Joker premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where it won the top prize- the Golden Lion. Besides Phoenix, Hildur Guðnadóttir also won an Academy Award for the film’s music.
Phoenix ended up winning numerous awards for his performance, including a Golden Globe Award, A BAFTA, and a Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Best Actor.
Robert de Niro plays the role of a talk show host in the film whom Joker suddenly shoots to death during an ongoing live telecast, sending ripples of shock around the world. Notably, de Niro’s films like Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy were huge influences on the film and the leading character.
